Happy Birthday Nina

Happy Birthday Nina Simone !!!  Nina is one of my favorite vocal artists'. You may or may not remember a movie in the late 1990's called The Thomas Crown Affair?  One of her songs - Sinnerman - was featured in that movie and is one of my favorite songs. Nina Simone was born Eunice Kathleen Waymon February 21, 1933 one of eight children and her father was a preacher.  She began playing piano at the age of three and performed at her local church. At 12 she had her first concert debut at Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. My Daily Illustrations

My Daily Illustrations

I start each day by doing a warm up illustration or painting so I thought I would share them here with you while I tell you about my favorite media. Gouache and watercolor are two of my absolute favorite lately.  I'm solely painting with gouache and watercolor because I've finally figured out that gouache resembles the acrylics in that they're opaque but it's their fluid like texture that I find is what I really like.   I've heard people say that watercolor is hard to manipulate therefore hard to paint with because it's fluid like consistency however I personally find it easy to...

Accidental Gift Tags

I accidentally created the most adorable Christmas Gift Tags.  So I start my day by doing some warm up illustrations in my art journal but  I also knew I was out of empty pages so I thought I'll use a sheet of my good paper that I use for original illustrations and cut it into several small pieces of paper for the warm ups.  This Elf was one of the warm up illustrations and after creating the fox below I thought wait a minute... I can cut them to measure about 3 x 5 inches, punch a hole for a pretty string or...

Artwork with a sense of innocence

There's only been a handful of Art Shows or Festivals where I've participated as a vendor and it's endearing to see little kids be just as interested in my work as their parents.    The majority of my illustrations and paintings consist of innocent childlike mermaids, unicorns and other mythological creatures.   Hugs for my Bud The original illustration of Hugs for my Bud sold right away at the last Art Show I did but prints are available in a couple of sizes which is the next best thing to owning the original.  These simple illustrations were created using Caran d'Ache and Watercolor paint.   ...

Marti Magna Caran d'Ache In the Making

Latest Obsession

So my absolute favorite product right now are the wax color pastel pencils from Caran d'Ache they're a wax pastel but I call them a "color stick" my favorite thing about them is that they are created with excellent fade resistant properties. I've seen them referred to as "color crayons" or "pastel crayons" but I wouldn't dare call them a crayon. So yes they do look like crayons but they're far from it -  no insult to crayons but this would give the impression that neocolor's can be used by anyone of any age for any project which in deed they can be BUT the reality is that...
